Questions? You're in the right place.

General

A: E-ZPass is an automated toll collection system that allows individuals and businesses to pay tolls electronically on the Maine Turnpike and on more than 40 other toll highways, bridges and tunnels in the eastern United States. An electronic "tag" is attached to the windshield or license plate of your vehicle. This tag relays the vehicle's entry and exit locations to the agency on which you are traveling. The appropriate toll is then calculated and charged to your Maine E-ZPass account.

A: You can use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass in Maine and wherever the E-ZPass logo is displayed at toll plazas in the following states: Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Maine Turnpike is part of a growing network of more than 40 toll highways, bridges and tunnels throughout the eastern United States accepting E-ZPass electronic toll payments.

A: Yes, use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass for all your Turnpike travel — to commute, to shop, traveling to your kids' games or wherever the road may take you. If you make 30 one-way trips (or 15 round-trips) in a month we'll credit your account with a 20% rebate. Use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass 40 times in one month, and you'll earn 40% back. PLEASE NOTE: Only Maine Turnpike trips incurring a toll count toward E-Z Discount Plan rebates.

An account must be valid and in good standing for the entire month to receive any discount. An account that has been suspended during any portion of a month will forfeit the discount for that month.

A: Each E-ZPass facility operates under its own toll rate structure. Some may offer discounts to customers enrolled with outside agencies, but most do not.

A: To assure compatibility between E-ZPass agencies, all vehicles are identified by a common Vehicle Reference Code (VRC). The VRC is determined by the vehicle's size, weight, number of axles and number of tires.

A: As long as you maintain a sufficient prepaid balance in your E-ZPass account, you may use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass on any participating highway, bridge or tunnel. The out-of-state agency will record your travel and charge the appropriate toll to the Maine Turnpike Authority. We, in turn, will deduct that amount from your prepaid balance.

A: You can add funds to your account online 24/7. You can also sign up for "Automatic Replenishment". With Automatic Replenishment, your credit or debit card is charged and your plan is automatically replenished whenever your balance falls below a pre-established level. You never have to worry about running short on funds. A: There are two types of E-ZPass tags. Most people prefer the interior windshield tag which cost $10 each, plus tax. Exterior tags, installed on the license plate, are $17 each, plus tax.

A: Interior tags, mounted just behind the rearview mirror, are the most commonly used because they are easy to install, remove and transfer from vehicle to vehicle. Interior tags, however, do not function properly in some vehicle models. Typically, any vehicle that has a windshield containing metal oxide or an internal heating element requires an exterior tag. Please refer to the list of Vehicles Needing Exterior Tags included in your application packet.

A: No. A lithium battery is permanently sealed into each E-ZPass tag. The Maine Turnpike guarantees the battery and the tag for three years.

A: E-ZPass agencies have different rules about transferring E-ZPass tags from one vehicle to another. When you travel on the Maine Turnpike, you may transfer your E-ZPass tags between vehicles with two axles and a maximum of 4 tires, including the following vehicle and Vehicle Reference Code numbers: passenger cars (72), passenger vans (264 and 266), pickup trucks (200 and 202), and motorcycles (136 and 140).

A: Please remember to remove your E-ZPass tag from your vehicle as the transporter is responsible for paying tolls for that transport.

A: Yes. In fact, we strongly recommend you list all the license plates of vehicles you will be using with your E-ZPass. This will help prevent violation notices from being issued.

A: You may order up to four E-ZPass devices for your E-ZPass Personal Account.

A: You may use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass to pay tolls when occasionally towing a trailer. The Maine Turnpike's E-ZPass system will identify the size of your vehicle as it passes through the toll lane and adjust the toll accordingly. Many other toll facilities do not offer this feature. Be sure to check with the toll facility before using your E-ZPass to pay while towing a trailer.

A: The required minimum opening balance is $20 for one E-ZPass tag. If you order two or more tags, the minimum opening balance is $40. You can have up to 4 tags on your account.

A: If an E-ZPass tag is lost or stolen, you should report it immediately to the Maine Turnpike E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 1-888-MTA-PASS (1-888-682-7277), Mon-Fri, 8 AM-6 PM. You can also report it by logging in to your account and indicating which tag was lost or stolen, or you can contact us to report it.

A: Please make sure your tag is properly mounted. Failure to mount a tag properly may result in incorrect toll charges, violations administrative fees, and/or fines.

A: Some rental cars come equipped with E-ZPass tags, or have accounts where toll is paid via license plate images. If you choose to use your own E-ZPass in a rental car, you must be aware that if the tag is not properly mounted, an image will be taken of the license plate and may be charged to the rental company's account — even if you listed the plate on your Maine E-ZPass account. Rental car company policies allow them to charge you fees based upon the contract you signed with them. The Maine Turnpike Authority only charges the toll incurred — any fees you are charged are from the rental company.

Business

A: There are three convenient options to meet a variety of business needs: a Prepaid Plan, a Postpaid Plan, and a Prepaid/Postpaid Combination plan. For more information on each account type, please visit our E-ZPass Benefits - Business page.

A: Businesses are required to establish an opening balance equal to $20.00 per each axle of the vehicles enrolled in the plan. For example, a business wishing to enroll three five-axle vehicles must establish a minimum account balance of 15 x $20.00 = $300.00.

A: You can add funds to your business account online 24/7. The easiest way to replenish your account is to sign up for "Automatic Replenishment." With Automatic Replenishment, your credit card is charged and your plan is automatically replenished whenever your balance falls below a pre-selected level. You will not have to worry about running short on funds. Of course, you can also replenish your account by keeping track of your balance and calling the E-ZPass Business Department with your credit card or sending a check whenever necessary.

Note: When making payment by check please allow 5 - 7 business days for processing.

A: If you do not select the "Automatic Replenishment" option for your prepaid plan the only notification you will receive will be via the island display screen and traffic lights at entry Toll Plazas. A "Yellow" light along with the island display screen displaying "EZ-Pass Low" will appear when your account reaches 25% of the system required minimum balance as noted on your original application.

Better yet, we now have a new Business Prepaid/Postpaid Combination Plan that will provide postpaid volume discounts for travel on the Maine Turnpike and the convenience of electronic toll collection on all other E-ZPass toll facilities.

Finally, for businesses that have never joined our postpaid volume discount plan because of surety bond requirements, we now offer a new Business Prepaid Plan that allows you establish a prepaid balance from which your tolls will be deducted as you travel in and out of Maine.
