Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQ

Q: What is E-ZPass?

A: E-ZPass is an automated toll collection system that allows individuals and businesses to pay tolls electronically on the Maine Turnpike and on more than 40 other toll highways, bridges and tunnels in the eastern United States. An electronic "tag" is attached to the windshield, roof or license plate of your vehicle. This tag relays the vehicle's entry and exit locations to the agency on which you are traveling. The appropriate toll is then calculated and charged to your Maine E-ZPass account.

Q: Why is the Maine Turnpike switching to E-ZPass?

A: The Maine Turnpike was one of the first highways in the east to implement electronic toll collection when we introduced Transpass in 1997. At that time, compatibility with systems in other states was not possible. Now our Transpass system is approaching the end of its expected lifespan and we have the opportunity to adopt a new system that is compatible with systems in other states.

Q: Where can I use my Maine Turnpike E-ZPass?

A: You can use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass wherever the E-ZPass logo is displayed in a growing number of states including Maine, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia. E-ZPass is also accepted on toll facilities in Massachusetts under the Fast Lane brand name.

Q: As a multi-state traveler, how do I decide which E-ZPass agency should manage my account?

A: The Maine Turnpike would be happy to serve as your "host" E-ZPass agency, but we recommend that you review your travel patterns and determine which E-ZPass agency makes the most financial and practical sense for you. We also recommend that you establish an account with a single agency and only use the tags issued by that agency for your travel on all participating facilities. Establishing multiple accounts and carrying tags from different agencies in your vehicle is likely to result in confusion, unnecessary charges, and perhaps violations.

Q: Will system accuracy and performance improve with E-ZPass?

A: Yes. Electronic toll collection continues to be a rapidly changing technology and many solid improvements have been made since the Maine Turnpike introduced Transpass in 1997. The E-ZPass system is actually less complicated than Transpass. Its simplicity will improve performance, accuracy and enforceability.

Q: Will the new system be better at stopping toll cheats?

A: Yes. In designing the new E-ZPass system, the Maine Turnpike Authority was determined to improve enforcement against violators. We have added new overhead sensors, front and back violation cameras and other technical improvements to tighten security. More importantly, the new generation of electronic toll collection will be more accurate and less complicated, allowing for more effective enforcement.

Q: Which account is right for me, a Personal Account or a Business Account?

A: The Personal Account is primarily designed for individuals or families who drive passenger vehicles, pick-up trucks, motorcycles and even those who occasionally tow a boat, snowmobile or other type of trailer. With a Personal Account you establish a prepaid balance for your travel on the Maine Turnpike and any E-ZPass compatible facility.

Personal Account FAQs

The Business Account is primarily designed for small and large businesses that operate trucks, buses, commercial-type vehicles and vehicles for hire. The Business Account features several plans to meet the various needs of businesses, including a postpaid plan offering volume discounts for Maine Turnpike travel, a prepaid plan for travel on the Maine Turnpike and all other E-ZPass compatible facilities, and a combination plan that provides both postpaid volume discounts on the Maine Turnpike and a prepaid balance to pay tolls when traveling on another E-ZPass facility.

Q: Will the Maine Turnpike's commercial discount program continue under E-ZPass?

A: Yes. The name of the plan changed from "commercial" to "business," but the new Business Postpaid Plan offers businesses volume discounts just as the old "commercial" program did.

Finally, for businesses that have never joined our postpaid volume discount plan because of surety bond requirements, we now offer a new Business Prepaid Plan that allows you establish a prepaid balance from which your tolls will be deducted as you travel in and out of Maine.

Q: How are my tolls paid when traveling out of state?

A: As long as you maintain a sufficient prepaid balance in your E-ZPass account, you may use your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass on any participating highway, bridge or tunnel. The out-of-state agency will record your travel and charge the appropriate toll to the Maine Turnpike Authority. We, in turn, will deduct that amount from your prepaid balance.

Please note: Businesses that only set up Postpaid Plans and do not establish a prepaid balance will not be able to use their E-ZPass tags outside of the Maine Turnpike.

Q: Do I have to open accounts with other agencies to use E-ZPass on other facilities?

A: No. Your Maine Turnpike E-ZPass can be used on any compatible E-ZPass facility, providing you have established a prepaid balance with sufficient funds to cover the tolls for your trip.

Q: How can I replenish my E-ZPass account?

A: The easiest way to replenish your account is to sign up for "Automatic Replenishment." With Automatic Replenishment, your credit card is charged and your plan is automatically replenished whenever your balance falls below a pre-established level. You never have to worry about running short on funds. Of course, you can also replenish your account by keeping track of your balance and calling our E-ZPass Customer Service Center or E-ZPass Business Department with your credit card or sending a check whenever necessary.

Q: How much does a Maine Turnpike E-ZPass tag cost?

A: There are three types of E-ZPass tags. Most people prefer the interior windshield tag which cost $ 10 each, plus tax. Exterior tags, installed on the vehicle roof or license plate, are $ 17 each, plus tax.

Back to top | Back to General FAQ

Q: How do I know if I need a windshield or license plate tag?

A: Interior tags, mounted just behind the rearview mirror, are the most commonly used because they are easy to install, remove and transfer from vehicle to vehicle. Interior tags, however, do not function properly in some vehicle models. Typically, any vehicle that has a windshield containing metal oxide or an internal heating element requires an exterior tag. Please refer to the list of Vehicles Requiring Exterior Tags included in your application packet.

A: No. A lithium battery is permanently sealed into each E-ZPass tag. The Maine Turnpike guarantees the battery and the tag for three years.

Q: What happens if I have more than one E-ZPass tag in my vehicle?

A: Multiple active tags in a single vehicle can result in inadvertent charges and violations. We strongly recommend that you establish a single E-ZPass account with just one agency and carry just one E-ZPass tag in each vehicle. If multiple tags are carried in a single vehicle, it is your responsibility to place the additional tags in a shielding bag to avoid unintended charges.
